Snowy Owl
The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a striking bird of prey native to the Arctic tundra. It is instantly recognisable by its brilliant white plumage, which provides camouflage against snow, and its piercing yellow eyes. Unlike many owls, the snowy owl is active during the day, especially in the endless daylight of Arctic summers. With a wingspan of up to 5 feet, it soars silently over open landscapes hunting lemmings, hares, and other small mammals. In winter, it sometimes migrates south, where its ghostly figure perched on fences or fields captivates birdwatchers. Majestic and powerful, the snowy owl is both a symbol of the wild Arctic and an icon of resilience in harsh environments.
